For many years, Dodge City First UMC has been giving away shoes at the start of the school year to help families afford good, quality shoes for their children as they return to school. Each year, approximately $8000 is raised to provide over 300 vouchers valued at $25 each, to be used at local merchants who exchange the vouchers for new shoes.
The bulk of the funds raised each year comes from members of the congregation who give contributions which are in honor or to remember a loved one. Those who wish to do so may fill out a donor sheet that is on display near the entrances into the church throughout the summer. A number of local individuals and businesses who are not members of our church family also contribute because they recognize the importance of this ministry.
On the day of enrollment, families will come to First UMC with their enrollment verification, and can receive one voucher for each child up to a maximum three per family. “Broad smiles and many expressions of gratitude enter through our doors the day we hand out the vouchers” says Rev. Lance Carrithers. “Families can get help with shoes that in turn frees up more of their own funds for other back-to-school needs such as clothing or supplies,” he said.
If you would like to donate to this great outreach, you may do so by designating your gift for “SHOE PROJECT” and either sending it or bringing it to First United Methodist Church, 210 Soule, Dodge City, KS 67801. All gifts are genuinely appreciated.
