Our first ten volunteers have signed on to be a “First Friend,” a weekly classroom visitor in our Champions for Schoolchildren project. This is very exciting news! These volunteers will be matched with a child in USD 443’s newcomer program. Newcomers are children who do not speak English and are attending a school in the U.S. for the very first time. “First Friends” spend at least 30 minutes once a week with their student reading, playing games, or doing other activities in an effort to help them develop proficiency in English.
First United Methodist Church is excited to have our first ten friends on board, and that’s an excellent beginning. Of course there is still room for others who might like to participate in this exciting partnership with our local schools. If you might be interested or would like to learn more about what being a “First Friend” entails, contact Melyssa White at the church, 620-227-8181. Together, we aim to be Champions for our Schoolchildren!
